Is SPC Flooring Scratch Resistant?

Many homeowners wish to have comfortable flooring that is easy on the eyes. One such ideal flooring is SPC flooring, which has a more cushioned feel and is available in a variety of beautiful colours and patterns.

But how ideal is SPC flooring for families with kids and pets? Is SPC flooring scratch resistant? Can it withstand frequent and constant pressure from kids, pets and even equipment running around? Read on as we try to answer these questions in this article.

What is SPC flooring?

Stone polymer composite, sometimes called stone plastic composite, is the next generation luxury vinyl flooring. SPC is composed of four layers that give it its different characteristics. The top transparent coating, called the wear layer, makes SPC flooring scratch and stain-resistant.

The second layer is a thin vinyl top coat that makes SPC flooring waterproof. It also defines the overall look of the floor and is available in different patterns and textures.  The third layer – the SPC core – is made of limestone powder and stabiliser. This layer makes the flooring more waterproof and gives it dimensional stability and a reinforced durable core.

The underlayment forms the last layer, helping SPC flooring reduce noise. It also softens the impact on the feet, which means it is also comfortable for kids and pets to tread or play on.

What kinds of scratching can SPC flooring resist?

SPC flooring can withstand everyday wear and tear. Because of its wear layer, SPC flooring is able to take the traffic of active households, such as moving furniture and appliances around, lugging suitcases, children running about, and even tap dancing. It is so durable that one can walk around in stilettos and not cause any damage.

Can dogs scratch SPC flooring?

Even larger, more active dogs will have a hard time scratching SPC flooring. Although it is better to err on the side of caution by choosing flooring with a thicker wear layer. A minimum of 0.3 mils, considered a light commercial wear rating, is recommended for homeowners with large dogs.

What to do in case of accidental scratching

There are times when accidents cannot be avoided. In case the SPC flooring accidentally sustained minor scratches, homeowners can do the following:

  1. Remove any surface dirt. Clean the floor using dish soap and warm water to cut through grease and dirt. Remember that grime will hamper a proper repair. Allow the floor to dry completely.
  2. Wax the floor. Car wax acts as a buffing agent to restore the original shine of the SPC flooring. Using a little car wax and a clean rag, work the wax into the scratch in a circular motion. Ensure the entire scratch is filled with the wax, and wipe away any excess from the floor.
  3. Rub gently with a clean, non-abrasive cloth to ensure a smooth finish.

How to prevent SPC flooring from being damaged

While it is easy to fix small scratches in SPC flooring, some simple steps can prevent it from being damaged in the first place.

  1. Add silicone or felt floor protectors or furniture pads beneath each foot of dining chairs, tables and other furniture.
  2. Use a carpet or large area rug. This will provide a layer of protection for frequently moved and heavy furniture.
  3. Never use a steel or wire brush or any abrasive scrubbing tool to clean the floor. This can damage the coating of the SPC flooring and may cause some scratching.

How to maintain SPC flooring

Cleaning SPC flooring regularly will help maintain its shine, keep it waterproof and prolong its overall lifespan. Daily cleaning using soap, warm water, and a clean mop will do the trick. Checking for any potential spills is also vital to prevent any stains.

Do a deep cleaning at least once a year. Make sure to use a cleaning agent that won’t harm the flooring. Bear in mind that anything that is not maintained properly wears down quickly.

What are the other benefits of SPC flooring?

Scratch-resistance aside, SPC flooring has plenty more to offer to homeowners looking for an upgrade. Here are some of its benefits:

SPC flooring is 100% waterproof.

This feature makes it a top flooring choice and perfect for bathrooms, laundry room and kitchen.

A winner in the aesthetics department

It mimics hardwood and marble and is available in a range of looks, textures and styles to complement any interior and furniture of the house.

Stable in temperature fluctuations

Due to its stone component or SPC core, this type of flooring remains stable in environments where temperatures change. This makes it ideal for residences and commercial establishments that utilise air conditioning or heating systems.

Reduced noise

This flooring has a dense SPC core that reduces noise underfoot. It doesn’t sound hollow, especially if one chooses for a noise-reducing underlayment. So, it is one of the best options to install in study rooms and bedrooms.

Easy to maintain

This type of flooring was designed with ease of cleaning and maintaining in mind. There is no need for any special cleaning solution – regular soap and water will work just fine. While deep cleaning is recommended, it is only called for at least once a year.

Easy to install

SPC flooring utilises a no-fuss click-lock tongue and groove installation method, making it quite easy to install. It doesn’t even require extra tools.

Affordable price

While it’s true that optional underlayment can drive the price of SPC flooring higher, it is still more affordable than other types of flooring.
